The LGPS Success Story - nearly here!

26 May 2022

They say time flies when you’re having fun and it is hard to believe that it will soon be 12 months since I started at Hymans Robertson! I will admit that I am not prone to retrospection but when we started to plan for our 8thJune event at Events @ No 6 in London, it really made me think about what I have seen in the LGPS versus what I expected.

Governance wasn’t new to me, but I can’t honestly say that I had read any of the reports from the Good Governance Project until I started to think about moving to Hymans. I didn’t know what I was missing! What surprised me most was that the building blocks for good governance were already in place. Seeing a sector get together and think about how to improve their governance was refreshing – no waiting for regulators or disaster in the LGPS. I have continued to be surprised by the commitment to doing the right thing, and the acceptance that there is always something more to aspire to. What amazed me most was that no one seemed to be congratulating themselves too much!

When you are a consultant, you are lucky: you get to see what is happening across the LGPS, and so you see the successes and wins at different funds. You also get to see the concerns and issues that funds have, and the solutions. If we are really lucky, we get to be part of the solution. We also have conversations with regulators and industry bodies, and I am delighted that Jo Donnelly and Jeremy Hughes from the Scheme Advisory Board (SAB) are giving us their time to come to our event and update us on the latest LGPS news from the SAB.

In short, this made us think that our event on 8th June should be a celebration of all of this. We want to share some of the successes we’ve seen, some thoughts and tips on the next opportunities and, more importantly, get together to hear your success stories.

The fact that we are hoping for some London sunshine and a BBQ wasn’t even a consideration. Honest.
