John has global responsibility for FirstGroup’s DB and DC schemes, including investment, benefit design, risk management and communications. He is also a Trustee of the Group’s pension arrangements for the Greyhound and Student businesses in the USA and Canada.

In addition, John is the Chairman of the £25bn Railways Pension Scheme, which provides benefits to over 350,000 members for 170 employers, and was previously a director of both RPMI and Railpen. In addition, John is an Independent Trustee Director on the Nestlé UK Pension Fund.

John qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC and held a number of financial and M&A roles in South West Electricity and Shell before moving into pensions and reward in the late 1990s. John joined FirstGroup in 1999, and after a two-year stint as Group Head of Reward at HBOS, returned to FirstGroup at the end of 2005.

John has an MA in Geography from St. Anne’s College, Oxford.
