DC Futures: venturing into a world worth retiring into

This was the second session in our DC Futures series, focused on this year's theme of resilience. We explored how schemes can build resilience by looking at capital allocation, climate and continuity.

This session focused on climate. We examined how the evolving view of fiduciary duty is shaping defined contribution investment strategies, and what this means for trustees as they balance financial returns with members’ long-term living standards.

We asked some of the big questions shaping strategies right now, including:

What are the implications of targeting a 1.5°C outcome when the world may land closer to 2.7°C? What would this mean for portfolios and risk management?

We heard from:

• Michael Jones from Eversheds Sutherland, on the legal landscape and how the shift towards prioritising members’ living standards could play out in practice.
• Julius Pursaill from NatWest Cushon, on the role venture capital can play in the climate transition – from backing new technologies to creating new opportunities for DC savers.
• Hannah Gilbert from British Business Bank, on current initiatives to channel pension scheme investment into high-growth UK businesses, and how this ties to members’ long-term financial security.
