2025 LGPS valuations: the big picture

calendar icon 12 May 2026

The 2025 actuarial valuations have now concluded, and the outcomes highlight the ongoing strength of the LGPS.

The 2025 LGPS valuations point to a scheme in a strong overall funding position, with improved funding levels leading to lower employer contribution requirements. This reflects a positive position across much of the LGPS.

However, much of this improvement is driven by higher expected future investment returns rather than realised gains. As a result, funds are taking a measured and prudent approach, balancing current affordability with long‑term sustainability.

In this session we covered;

  • Strong funding position: Most LGPS funds are well-funded, leading to reduced employer contribution requirements.
  • Cautious outlook: Improvements are largely driven by higher assumed future returns, so funds are taking a measured approach.
  • Greater variation between funds: Outcomes differ more widely due to local strategies, assumptions and investment performance, reinforcing the importance of scheme-specific decisions.
