Completing an Internship from Home

02 Sep 2020 - Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

In December last year I accepted my place as an Actuarial Summer Intern in the London office, and since then a lot has changed. Upon starting in July, the firm had been working from home already for 3 months, and as interns we would be as well. Many of us were also allocated to new business units as a result, and I was allocated to the Client Management team.

Despite these changes, I had a warm welcome into Hymans, even digitally. The Client Management team took me on as their first intern, and under these circumstances. However, they still did an excellent job of getting me involved in a variety of projects such as the Voice of Client survey. I was also still able to get involved in some Actuarial work and virtually meet lots of the London team. This allowed me to develop the specific skills for an Actuarial career, whilst getting a broader understanding and insight into the firm.

Overall, I believe that completing my internship with Hymans whilst working from home was very beneficial, and despite missing out on the office environment, and not being able to meet colleagues in person, this could be an insight into what work looks like in the future. My 8 weeks here at Hymans went very quickly, I have learnt a lot and really enjoyed it. I thought communicating only through email, messages and calls would be much more difficult than it turned out to be, and I attribute how well this went to the friendliness of the staff here at Hymans. This really stood out to me, everyone was really understanding, and happy to help wherever possible.

I am very thankful that I was able to complete my internship, even with these differences, and I hope that in the future I will be able to meet some of you in person.
