What I love about being a Developer at Hymans

07 Aug 2021 - Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

What made you join Hymans?

If I’m being honest I had never heard of Hymans Robertson before a lecturer at University notified me of a summer internship opportunity Hymans were offering for Software Developers. As soon as I began looking into the company I realised that this was somewhere I wanted to work. Their core values really stood out to me and I felt like they were something I could get behind. I loved my time here as an intern and when offered a full-time post starting after I graduated from University I jumped at the chance.

 What is your role?

I am a software developer within the AppX team.

What does a typical day look like?

The AppX team start each day with a 15 minute stand up where we catch up on what has been going on within the team over the past day and what we plan to do over the coming day. After this my work is extremely varied. I’ve taken on ownership of the releases we do within the team so often I spend time liaising with the Application Operations team about what releases we have scheduled and getting support from them if we have any issues with these releases. Other than that, most of my time will be spent doing development work on one of the multitude of products the AppX team supports.

What has been your biggest challenge at Hymans?

My biggest challenge at Hymans has been taking on the ownership of the releases for our team and through this becoming part of the department wide Continuous Improvement of Releases team (CIR). The CIR team are working hard to standardise releases between all of the different teams within the department and moving towards fully automated release processes. This has been a great experience for me as it has allowed me to work closely with Technical Architects and Application Operations team and expand my knowledge in this area and then take this new knowledge back to my own team.

What has impressed you most about being at Hymans?

I think what has impressed me most about Hymans Robertson is their willingness to trust youth. From the moment I started here I was encouraged to speak up in meetings and always felt my opinion was valued despite being the junior member of them. Recently I’ve been working closely with multiple partners from across the business on small ‘Digital Demonstrators’ to show case how we can provide digital solutions to problems they face. At no point did I ever feel out of place or that I was the junior person in the room and that’s largely down to the excellent environment Hymans Robertson has created.
